UMC of Berea, Ohio offers
Learn and Serve Mission Trip to Guatemala in June

The United Methodist Church of Berea, Ohio works to spread “the word of God’s love as our mission to our church, our community, and the world.” We will have the opportunity to share God’s love to the world through a Learn and Serve Mission trip to Guatemala this June. The activities will take place in and around Xela (SHAY-LA), also known as Quetzaltenango. The city is Guatemala’s second largest and is a four-hour drive from the capital, Guatemala City.

Located in Central America, Guatemala is a known as the Land of Eternal Spring for its pleasant weather. Guatemala’s rich culture derives from the indigenous population who descend from the ancient Mayans. Indigenous Guatemalans make up nearly half of the population. Although they work hard and have a positive attitude, many of them face economic and social challenges.

Through the trip, we will both learn and serve. We will serve by working with young people in English and Spanish on nutrition and health topics at the Miguel Ángel Asturias Academy. We will learn by (1) visiting La Clínica Popular Metodista, a United Methodist health clinic that serves the medical and dental needs of many thousands of at-risk Guatemalans; (2) meeting women who participate in a micro-loan program that allows them to raise vegetables and livestock as well as make chocolate and weavings; and (3) delving into Guatemalan culture through learning how to make tortillas and participating in a weaving demonstration.

Cost: $750, includes meals, rooms with private baths and hot water in a convent, and transportation within Guatemala; airfare is separate (estimated to be between $800 and $1,000 – earlier booking of airfare usually results in lower fares); six to ten participants; non-UMC of Berea members may participate; depart Saturday, June 16 for Guatemala City and return Sunday, June 24; deadline for registration is Tuesday, May 1.
