The Chancel Organ - Sanctuary

Our organ has been designed to lead in worship. The organ consists of four divisions, each performing a unique role in the service. The Great Organ is located in the center of the main case at the top. This division is the most important. Its high position enhances its prominence in the tonal structure of the organ. It is well suited for leading hymn singing and supporting the choir when a firm accompaniment is required.

The Swell Organ is in the main case directly below the Great Organ. It has swell shades in front which permit dynamic expression. This division consists of a full range of tonal colors, well suited to accompanying vocal solos and more subdued choral music.

The Positive stands on the floor in front of the main case. Its tone is based on a 4-foot Principal which gives it a lighter quality of sound. The pipes of the Pedal Organ are located in the two large towers on each side of the main case. In addition to providing the harmonic foundation for the divisions, it can also be used for solo passages.

The case work which surrounds each division is an important component in the design. Constructed of solid oak and shallow in depth, it focuses and projects the sound. The attractive color of the casework was accomplished by exposing the wood to ammonia fumes. The exposed or façade pipes are made of 80% tin. The tin content of other pipes varies from 25% to 90%. Materials of the remaining pipes include copper, lead or oak.

There are three keyboards and a pedal board. The keys activate the pipes mechanically. The pipes are played by depressing keys which operate a system of levers and thin strips of wood called trackers. These connect directly to valves that admit wind to the pipes. They respond precisely to the organists touch, allowing the greats possible control of the instrument. The mechanical-action system is reliable and trouble free. Many organs in Europe built along these same principles have been playing for over 300 years. To facilitate rapid changes in dynamics and tonal color the organ is provided with electric stop action with a mechanical-setter combination. This enables the organist to set the varying moods of worship.
